It is usually not possible for you to gain funding or begin data collection until all the necessary permissions and approvals have been obtained. Please note that this process can take time, and this should be reflected in your project timetable.

The first step is to determine why you are undertaking the research, as this will have a bearing on where you need to gain the appropriate permissions and approvals.

• The research is being undertaken as part of an academic award (e.g. MSc or PhD) or as part of your job in an academic institution
• The research is being undertaken as part of your job in the NHS
• The research is being undertaken as part of your job in Social Services
• The research is being undertaken on behalf of the College of Occupational Therapists (e.g. a comissioned project) or as part of your involvement with one of the College’s Specialist Sections
