Tina WalkerMy name is Tina Walker.

I qualified as an OT in 1997, after three years at St Andrews School of OT. As an older student I found the course quite difficult and was convinced I had failed. Instead, I managed a very respectable 2.2.

I have had a varied few years. My first ever post was at Leicester General Hospital and lasted for two years. Then I was in mental health for a year before deciding I was a physical OT and not a mental heath OT. I then worked as a locum with Reeds and then Holt Medical. Since June 2003 I have been employed by Northamptonshire Heartlands PCT on a rotational post. I am currently working in a therapy unit and also have some input onto the ward.

I was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease in November 2003, which was quite a shock, but looking back I have had symptoms for a few years and have ignored them. I consider myself to be lucky (to quote part of Michael J Fox's book title) inasmuch as I have access to excellent support, both at work and out of work. I know I can discuss issues with my manager, who is very supportive, if I need to. I also have Access To Work, who have given me a support worker and help with travel to and from work. Outside of all this is my Parkinsons nurse Richard Glasspool, who is a fount of knowledge and very easy to talk to.

I am delighted to be on the disability forum and I hope we can make the workplace a safe place for anyone working with a disabilty. I also am looking forward to the challenges ahead.
