The Northern Ireland Specialist Section for HIV/AIDSs, Oncology Palliative Care and Education is affiliated to the College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section - HIV/AIDS, Oncology & Palliative Care.
Occupational therapists in Northern Ireland within this clinical area have worked together for a number of years and had already established a Special Interest Group.
With recent developments and increased investment in this area a need to develop a more formalised regional working group was recognised to ensure effective communication, provide support and share knowledge and information. This group has been established since December 2003 and in December 2004, merged with the Special Interest Group and became formally affiliated to the College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section.
The group has both regional and cross sector (primary, secondary and voluntary) representation and aims to expand this representation further to include, not only occupational therapists working directly in this clinical area but also those with a special interest in the field to ensure more regional representation.
The remit of the group, as agreed, was to create a regional forum for occupational therapists to:
- Share information and best practice
- Standardise practice and improve equity of service provision
- Develop regional standards and guidelines in line with national standards and guidelines in relation to oncology and palliative care
- Improve communication and information sharing across sectors (primary, secondary and voluntary) and be involved in the development of integrated multiprofessional care pathways
- Develop links with other professional groups both regionally and nationally
- To promote research, audit and evidence based practice within this clinical area
- Agree representation and share information from the Cancer Network (NICaN)
- Identify issues for occupational therapists working within oncology and palliative care and unmet need
- Strengthen links with the College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section – HIV/AIDS, Oncology & Palliative Care and strengthen support nationally
- Promote and facilitate education and continuous professional development in this clinical area
