Scottish Occupational Therapy Network in Oncology and Palliative Care (SOTNOP)

SOTNOP was established in 1999/2000 in recognition by a number of clinicians of the need to network and seek support from peers. Many OTs, particularly those who were Hospice employed, were working in isolation. All were increasingly aware of the need to address a number of issues that were not possible when working singlehandedly.

Current membership is 40+ from all hospices, acute oncology centres (4) and a number of developing oncology posts. SOTNOP also has primary care and social work based OTs who have a special interest. There is a passing membership from rotational staff and some members are respiratory/renal based. We also have links with the Educational centres in Scotland.

SOTNOP meets three times a year (approx attendance 12 - 15 from Scotland-wide area). Smaller working groups meet between times to work on specific topics.

Mission Statement (May 2003)

To improve quality and effectiveness of occupational therapy intervention to those affected by cancer or with palliative care needs.

This is achieved through a national network of support, education and information sharing in order to increase knowledge and promote professional development.
